One in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime.  Yet, because of the incredible work of Susan G. Komen for the Cure, there is more hope today for breast cancer patients than ever before.  Komen has been instrumental in helping fund better treatments, research and education for women and men diagnosed with breast cancer.

WTHR-TV Channel 13 is proud to help support Susan G. Komen for the Cure in its’ mission to save countless lives.  We have served as a media sponsor of the Komen Indianapolis Race for the Cure for eight years now, and we hope to continue sponsoring this wonderful race until researchers, some day, find a cure.

The Komen Indianapolis race is one of the biggest Komen events in the nation.  Last year, a record-breaking number of people registered for the race - around 44,000 – and they raised a record-setting $2.6 million dollars.  And what an unbelievable “sea of humanity” it is – people of all ages, races and genders gathering on the downtown Indianapolis streets to help support people who have bravely battled breast cancer – some who’ve lost the fight, others who are surviving and thriving.

WTHR-TV will extensively promote the race with Public Service Announcements urging Hoosiers to join the cause.  The PSA’s will feature News Anchors John Stehr and Andrea Morehead, and Indianapolis Colts Center Jeff Saturday and his wife Karen, who are Honorary Race Chairs.  You will see these PSA’s on our air for more than month leading up to Race Day.  WTHR will also produce several news series profiling breast cancer survivors and breast cancer treatments.  We’ll interview Komen spokespeople and race participants in our Noon Interview segments called Focus.  We will promote the race regularly in our daily on-air Community Calendars.  And we will produce and broadcast a half-hour race special to air on Channel 13 on Saturday, April 11th, at 7:30 p.m. titled, “Race for the Cure: Bringing Hope to Millions.”

On race day, WTHR crews will be in downtown Indianapolis to bring viewers a birds-eye view of the event from Chopper 13, and we will have reporters and anchors along the race route with all of the race highlights.  John Stehr and Andrea Morehead will co-emcee Race Day Opening Ceremony festivities and WTHR will, once again, form our own race team of station employees and  viewers.  WTHR will also have a tent on-site offering health-related services.

Year after year, we are excited to be involved with the Susan G. Komen for the Cure organization and this incredible race.  WTHR cares about our Central Indiana community and we want to continue to be a part of an event that can change or save the lives for Hoosiers.  Please support the Komen Indianapolis chapter and this amazing race to find a cure!  We’re all in this together.  We can’t succeed without you.
