Susan G. Komen for the Cure Indianapolis Affiliate serves more than 21 counties in Central Indiana through a variety of outreach programs, educational support and grants including Delaware County.
The “Reaching Out” Breast health program of Cancer Services of Delaware County – Little Red Door was once again the recipient of a grant from the Indianapolis Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure® for more than $30,000 This is the fifth year in a row the program received funding from Komen Indianapolis.
“Reaching Out” is a community collaboration between Cancer Services of Delaware County – Little Red Door and several local Delaware County organizations. The program provides breast health education, medical services and screening opportunities to uninsured and underinsured women in a variety of settings, including places of worship, women’s shelters and other places where women gather. Also, whenever possible, a physician is present at one of the various locations to offer free clinical breast exams to those who attend. If the physician orders a mammogram, the “Reaching Out” program will take care of all the details – scheduling the appointment, sending a reminder, providing transportation and offering advice about what to expect at the appointment. Perhaps most importantly, if the woman is uninsured or underinsured, there is no cost to her.
The “Reaching Out” Breast Health program served over 300 Delaware County women in 2007 and more than 1,200 women over the past five years. “This program is God sent to so many women in our community. I get thank you cards, cakes, donations to our agency from women who are so appreciative of us for helping them get a mammogram. Because of support from Komen Indianapolis, this program has grown past our expectations,” said Denise Hurt, “Reaching Out” Coordinator for Cancer Services of Delaware County – Little Red Door.
