Susan G. Komen for the Cure® is the nation’s largest private source of funding for breast cancer research and community outreach programs. Locally, the Central Indiana Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure® will grant $1.6 million to 17 non-profit organizations in Central Indiana in 2011. These grants are funded with a portion of the proceeds generated by the Komen Central Indiana Race for the Cure® and other fundraising events throughout the year.
The Affiliate conducts a detailed community needs assessment every two years to determine existing gaps in local breast health and breast cancer services (view our 2011 Community Profile). Grants are awarded through a peer-reviewed process that is consistent with Komen national standards. Grants are not awarded to individuals.
We received 29 applications totaling $2.4 million in requested funds to provide services in our 21-county service area. The selection committee consisted of 15 community members who prioritized the applicant programs based on the needs outlined in our most recent Community Profile, which is conducted biannually.
The Komen Central Indiana service area consists of 21 Central Indiana counties: Bartholomew, Boone, Brown, Clinton, Decatur, Delaware, Grant, Hamilton, Hancock, Hendricks, Henry, Howard, Johnson, Madison, Marion, Montgomery, Morgan, Rush, Shelby, Tippecanoe and Tipton.
If you or someone you know is in our 21-county service area and in need of breast health assistance, try contacting the nearest grantee listed to see if you qualify for assistance.
