The Indianapolis Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure® is pleased to announce final fund raising and participation numbers from the 2010 Race for the Cure®. Held April 17, the Race was a success in every way and generated some of the best results in the Race’s 19 year history.
A total of $2.5 million was raised through corporate partners, team and individual fund raising activities and Race registration fees. This was the first year participants exceeding raised more than $1 million in donations from individual donors. “We are ecstatic about the results of this year’s event,” said Executive Director Dana Curish. “Despite a down economy, the Central Indiana community continues to make an impact in the fight against breast cancer through generous donations that enable us to support a wide variety of programs in our area.”
42,091 participants filled the streets of downtown Indianapolis to run and walk the 5K and 1-mile courses that winds along the White River State Park and IUPUI campuses. Included in that registration were 1,726 competitive runners and more than 600 teams.
The Central Indiana event is the sixth largest Komen Race for the Cure in the world.
The 2010 Race broke the record for the most breast cancer survivors – 2,537. Survivors dressed in bright pink shirts laughed, cried and hugged each other while parading through pink balloon arches to the applause of thousands of onlookers during the annual Pink Parade of Survivors that kicks off each year’s Race. “Emotions were high, the air was truly electric,” said Curish, a 20+ year survivor, herself.
Race for the Cure® is Komen Indianapolis’ signature fund raising event – giving the organization the ability to fund research, education and early screening services for low income Hoosiers. “These funds enable us to support a wide variety of programs in the area including more than $1.6 million in local grants directly impacting Central Indiana this year,” said Wendy Noe, Program Coordinator for education and grants.
The deadline for 2011 grant applications from local non-profits seeking support from Komen Indianapolis is July 23.
Corporate sponsorship continued strong support too. Key sponsors included Kroger, Hoosier Lottery, St. Vincent Hospital, WTHR, National Bank of Indianapolis, Community Health Network, Target, United Healthcare, J.C. Penney, Perdue Farms, Starbucks, Anthem, Toshiba Business Solutions and Entercom Radio.
2011 will mark the 20th Anniversary of the Indianapolis Race, and committees will soon begin the planning and organization of this event. Registration is expected to open in October. Organizations or individuals interested in volunteering or sponsoring the 2011 Race can contact the Komen offices at info@komenindy.org or (317) 638.CURE.
