Breast Cancer Facts

  • 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime.
  • The 5-year survival rate when breast cancer is found early is 98%.
  • 90-95% of all diagnosed breast cancer is diagnosed in individuals with no family history.
  • While rare, men are diagnosed with breast cancer – roughly 2,000 are diagnosed in the U.S. every year.
  • African American women have less chance of developing breast cancer than Caucasian women, but are more likely to die from it.

Breast Self Awareness

While there is no cure for breast cancer, the chances of survival are greater than ever. The three steps to protect yourself from late-stage diagnosis:

  • Breast self awareness
  • Clinical breast exams at your annual physical
  • Yearly mammograms starting at age 40, and sometimes even earlier if you have an immediate family history of breast cancer and/or your physicians recommends being screened

The Helpline is committed to providing timely and accurate information to anyone with breast health and breast cancer concerns, including breast cancer patients and their family and friends. 9 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Central Standard Time, Monday – Friday, TDD available. *Please note, their time zone is one hour behind Indiana.
