We want to make sure you know what your support for Komen Central Indiana and the local Race for the Cure accomplishes. Please read and share the following as needed to make sure everyone knows the facts about the local and global impact you make.
Where do my donations to Komen Central Indiana and its Race for the Cure go?
75% goes to our community grants program that serves 21 counties (for details on these programs, see below).
25% funds global research grants seeking the causes, improved treatments and cures for breast cancer. Nearly $14 million has come back to Indiana in the form of research grants the past 11 years, and 14 are currently underway at Indiana University and Purdue University.
Who benefits from Komen Central Indiana’s grant funding?
Women and men in Bartholomew, Boone, Brown, Clinton, Decatur, Delaware, Grant, Hamilton, Hancock, Hendricks, Henry, Howard, Johnson, Madison, Marion, Montgomery, Morgan, Rush, Shelby, Tippecanoe and Tipton counties. We do our best to raise breast health awareness among all Central Indiana residents, as well as fund resources for screenings and follow-up care for people in these areas who need but can’t afford them. With your help, we were able to fund $1.6 million in grant requests last year (for grantees, please see
www.komenindy.org/impact) – this provided nearly 4,000 mammograms; 2,715 clinical breast exams; 801 diagnostic testing and 426 support care services.
What services are provided with grant funding?
Your donations fund screenings (clinical breast exams and mammograms), diagnostics (MRIs, biopsies, ultrasounds), treatment assistance, health care navigation, medication assistance and support services such as transportation, child care, wigs, prosthetics and whatever else is needed to make sure patients can complete treatment with the support they need.
Does Komen Central Indiana fund Planned Parenthood?
No. Planned Parenthood of Indiana is not a grant applicant or recipient. Komen Central Indiana’s grantees currently include direct medical providers – like hospitals that have the ability to provide screenings and treatment – and cancer agencies that can screen and provide support services through diagnosis.
How does Komen Central Indiana decide which breast health programs to fund?
All Komen affiliate grant applications are solicited through an open request for proposals and are reviewed by a grants committee comprised of local physicians, community health professionals and breast health advocates. Any nonprofit organization may apply for a grant from Komen Central Indiana to provide services specific to our mission. The grants committee recommends to our board of directors those grant applications that should be approved for funding, and grant recipients are required to provide detailed reports quarterly.
How are our local needs assessed and met?
Komen Central Indiana does a local community needs assessment every two years to make sure grant funds are making the biggest impact where they’re needed most. To see the breast health statistics in our 21-county service area – including areas with highest incidence and mortality rates or the lowest employment or insurance rates – you can view our 2011 Community Profile: http://www.komenindy.org/articles/central-indiana-community-needs-action-plan-for-2011-2013/
