Education & Grants Coordinator

Wendy joined Komen Central Indiana in 2005 as the education and grants coordinator. Wendy’s role is to implement all mission outreach and breast health programs. Wendy coordinates a budget of two million dollars in local grant money and maintains a close relationship with the 17 grantees in the Komen Central Indiana’s 21-county service area. Wendy also is responsible for educating the community about breast cancer and the three-step early detection plan through interactive presentations and health fairs.

Wendy has been instrumental in:

• Establishing a 10-part breast health webinar series for medical providers.
• Conducting two community needs assessments (see 2011 Community Profile) and creating action plans to help meet the specific and immediate needs of women in our service area.
• Creating and coordinating the breast health disparity meetings, which attracts more than 20 collaborative partners that meet bi-monthly to work toward reducing the disparities women and men face in their fight against breast cancer.
• Serving on a task force hosted by Komen National to make recommendations on promoting particular clinical trials. 

Personal Background

Wendy has been married 11 years to Birl. They have two daughters, Karey & Cameron and a yorkie terrier, Ollie. Wendy is personally and professionally committed to finding a cure to breast cancer. Five women in her family have been diagnosed with breast cancer. She just completed her 2^nd Komen 3-Day, which is a 60-mile walk / fundraiser. She does it in memory of her Aunt Karey and for her daughters and nieces’ futures.

Fun Facts

• Guilty pleasures: anything her twin sister cooks (which usually contains some sort of cream and lots of calories), wine, big metal chickens for a little perspective, and the Food Network. I also love to sit on my couch with a glass of wine, peace and quiet and a good book…the peace and quiet rarely happens.
• Favorite beverage: Skinny non-fat vanilla latte from Starbucks in the morning and a glass of Cupcake Chardonnay in the evening.
• Favorite book(s):  Firefly Lane by Kristin Hannah and Little Women by Louisa May Alcott.
• Favorite late night snack: Snickers mini-ice cream bars
• Favorite vacation spot: Anywhere that is hot and on the beach.
